These superpowers can boost your reputation at work

Internal comms pros need to put their skills to work building a brand identity around their own department to get the respect and buy-in they need.

We spoke with Mandy Mooney, vice president of internal communications at Prologis, about how communicators can shore up their brand with leaders without coming across as too self-promotional.

She suggested that when they’re hyping up their own work, internal communications should also give a positive mention to the people and functions they’re communicating about.

“I can brag about myself if I also give you a compliment,” Mooney said. “Dual promotion makes it a little less cringey.”

Mooney also mentioned that internal comms pros should know that they’ve got many superpowers in their skillsets to show off their chops to their leaders, and that optimism is among the most powerful.

“I like to think about it as cautious optimism, because as internal communications people, we have to be optimistic and be the light in the room, the calm in the chaos,” Mooney said.

But she added that much of that optimism is rooted in good planning.

“We always have a plan B, C and F,” Mooney said. “We’re always thinking ahead.”
